This post is a long post, but one we wanted to share with you so you can learn a bit about us, who we are and what Rack Life is all about.
We may have opened our doors here at Rack Life, but we are by no means just open. We may have physically built this space from scratch and are ready for business however, we realise how far from being 100% ready we are when no one really knows who we are, what we’re about, what our mission is, what we value, what we want to offer, how we are different and ultimately our story. It’s not easy to truely share your story and make yourself vulnerable to rejection and critique but we are so passionate about our belief and vision that we understand to attract like minded people, create a true community and actually impact peoples lives, you (the client) need to be emotionally connected not only to the space but to our story. Without that we are just another gym, which isn’t who we are, we are so much more then that. This is our story.
Rack Life Pty Ltd is a company that consists of two directors/owners, myself, Rachael Robertson, and my twin sister Ammie Komel. With over 15 years experience in multiple industries between us including, fitness, yoga, sport coaching, business coaching, financial services, fashion design and numerous more, our company is ultimately an amalgamation of our respective expertise, experience and strengths to create a vision we’ve have had for over 17 years.
It all began when Ammie, a dedicated and brilliant entrepreneur, had a vision at 16 years of age to create a wholeness centre that would become our combined empire. It would incorporate fitness, health, food and fashion with the latter two being my predominant passions, each with their own individual space and influence. We’ve shared this vision ever since despite our lives taking two very different paths.
In the immediate years after we both completed high school and university degrees, although both in completely opposite fields, I studied communications and history whilst Ammie took the route of financial services and management. Therefore, as life does, we followed our individual paths towards our passions and money and pushed our dream of a combined empire to the back of our minds whilst we focused on ourselves. Despite this however, we often spoke of our vision as an actual future prospect, continuously keeping it alive, we just never knew when or how it was going to eventuate.
Then life happened. Ammie became the Personal Training Co-ordinator at North Sydney Fitness first at the ripe age of 19 and I went on to study Fashion Design which eventually took me to Brisbane whilst Ammie remained in Sydney working, studying and forever growing her passions.
Despite a short stint living together in Brisbane when we were 22, our lives could not have been further apart particularly after I met my future husband and fell pregnant with my first child at 23. This eventuated in me having a further two children, settling on the gold coast, starting two fashion labels which I had to surrender for mother hood and then assisting my husband running our successful fire detection company. For Ammie, she continued to grow her experience and knowledge in the fitness industry whilst adding Yoga instructing to her resume, she eventually settled into full time work in the financial services industry. She worked across several banks and companies, working her way up the corporate ladder to find her passion rest in business coaching where she became a franchise manager for small business running teams of leaders whose purpose was to implement efficiencies within small business.
By 30 years of age our lives could not be further apart. I was living on the gold coast a married mother of three juggling sport, school, the house and business whilst Ammie was living in Sydney on an indispensable income. However, the empire still lurked in our minds and as we got older it came up more regularly, but as we got older it also seemed harder and harder to envision its actuality. Then Ammie made a choice that felt like a step forward, she gave up her high paying, high stress corporate job to follow her dream of fitness, business/life coaching and lifestyle and moved to the gold coast.
But life had different plans. In June 2016 we were thrown a curve ball when my husband was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. Within three months it had progressed to stage 4, by 6 months he was hospitalised and given weeks left to live. We did everything we could both medically and naturally to find a cure but unfortunately he lost his battle 12 months after he was diagnosed in July 2017. All of a sudden we were put into a life changing situation that not only effected us but also everyone close to us. Immediately I had three children I had to provide for (after technically being out of the workforce for almost 7 years), a company to dissolve and everything that comes with household duties and no male presence, whilst Ammie felt the immediate need to support us unconditionally and whole heartedly.
Our lives were intrinsically combined once again.
Twelve months may not seem like a lot of time, which in regards to living it absolutely is not. However, when you give up everything and focus solely on the ones you love as a mother, wife and full time carer, there is a lot of time for reflection, soul searching and choosing which way your life was (for my husband) going to end and for us going to continue. Which was always forward! We had a choice. We could either curl up in a corner and fall apart or we could continue moving forward because ultimately that is what life does, it doesn’t stop. As our older sister once said “The sun rises every morning, life doesn’t wait.” So we chose that path, for my boys, for me and for us.
Rack Life Pty Ltd was born! Circumstances were not ideal, were never planned, expected or warranted and in every way we would give it back to change what had happened, but that is not life. We were given an opportunity to put the first piece of our empire in and we took it with both hands to create a physical space to project our vision and to pass our beliefs, values, mission and story onto others, to show people we all have a choice regardless of the situation.
We are more than just a gym or yoga studio. We are an amalgamation of ideas, experience and personalities whose purpose is to create a community of like minded people who, like us, want to become the best versions of themselves they can be.
We don’t want people who simply come in to train and walk out. We don’t want people who come to us because they think they have to, who think appearance is the main gain. We want people like us, people who want to be here, who want to grow, be better (in their body, mind, work and life) and choose the path they want. We want to show people that although life happens – the good, the bad and the ugly; you choose the life you live and that tomorrow is too late. If you keep procrastinating, taking time to make a choice you may run out of time. In a minute your life can change or be gone.
So if you want to choose life, to be the best version of yourself you can be, not just physically (‘perfection’ doesn’t exist) but whole-heartedly, do it today and Rack Life will not only open our doors to you, we will embrace you, watch you sore and build you more.
